Smooth collie is an active, energetic and eager-to-please companion. The breed has very old roots as a herding dog. Over time, herding duties decreased and today the main task is to be a versatile working dog and family member. Former working duties have been replaced by many different forms of dog sports. It is nowadays again possible to train herding on a guided basis, and herding as a hobby has become quite popular. 
The breed is relatively easy to train, and good basic training is necessary even if there is no plans for any dog sports.

Collie is suitable for active and mobile people. As an adaptable breed, it can adapt to life in the city or in the country side, as long as the need for exercise is taken care of (= plenty of free exercise).  Collie is not suitable for living outside or apart from the family, they need their family nearby.
